Responsibilities:

The Research Scientist-Senior leads the development of research lab projects, plans and executes laboratory research, and serves as a key leader in assigned scientific discipline. Along with the Principal Investigator, seeks independent outside research funding and participates in major proposals and presentations. As an individual contributor, carries out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new or improved research techniques and procedures. In a supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a variety of projects that may require the use of sophisticated project planning techniques. Demonstrates expert-level knowledge in a variety of concepts, practices and scientific area of study.

Summary

The Genomics and Spatial Biology Collaborative Laboratory (CoLab) at SCRI is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Scientist to lead and oversee advanced genomics and spatial biology projects. The successful candidate will play a critical role in driving cutting-edge research, managing core facility operations, and providing expert guidance to researchers. This position requires a deep understanding of genomics, transcriptomics, spatial biology techniques, and a commitment to advancing scientific discovery. The Senior Research Scientist will provide innovative and rapid turn-around services for basic, translational, and clinical research, to maximize efficient use of CoLab assets, and to expand services to a wider customer base. The Senior Scientist reports directly to the Senior Director of Shared Research Resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research and Development:

  2. Lead the design, execution, and analysis of complex genomics and spatial biology experiments.

  3. Working with Research Scientist II in the Colab, lead development and optimization of protocols for high-throughput sequencing, PacBio long-read sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and other advanced techniques.

  4. Collaborate with researchers to design experiments, interpret data, and publish results.

  5. Keep up with technology landscape in the field and work towards keeping the core facility capabilities at the cutting edge.

  6. Core Facility Management:

  7. Oversee daily operations of the Genomics and Spatial Biology CoLab, ensuring high standards of quality and efficiency.

  8. Manage and maintain advanced sequencing platforms, spatial transcriptomics equipment, and other core facility technologies.

  9. Ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality control, and standard operating procedures.

  10. Technical Expertise:

  11. Provide expert guidance and support to researchers on experimental design, data analysis, and troubleshooting.

  12. Stay current with emerging technologies and methodologies in genomics and spatial biology, and implement relevant innovations.

  13. Conduct training sessions and workshops for researchers and staff on core facility technologies and protocols.

  15. In partnership with computing and data science core at SCRI, support data acquisition and management in the genomics and spatial biology area.

  16. Participate in design, development and implementation of data management and data science solutions.

  17. Collaboration and Communication:

  18. Foster collaborative relationships with internal and external researchers, promoting the use of core facility services.

  19. Prepare and present scientific reports, collaborate with faculty users to develop grant applications, including contributions on data, literature searches and evaluations.

  20. Represent the core facility at conferences, seminars, and institutional meetings.

  21. Leadership and Mentorship:

  22. Mentor and supervise junior scientists and technicians within the core facility.

  23. Promote a culture of scientific excellence, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Requirements:

Required Education/Experience:

  • PhD or M.D. in Molecular or Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or other closely related field.

  • Minimum of six (6) years research lab experience in field of specialization.

  • Prior experience with laboratory management.

  • Prior teaching experience.

Min to Max Hourly Salary: $59.18 - $88.77 /hr

Min to Max Annual Salary: $123,094.40 - $184,641.60 /yr

Salary Information:

This compensation range was calculated based on full-time employment (2080 hours worked per calendar year). Offers are determined by multiple factors including equity, skills, experience, and expertise, and may vary within the range provided.

Seattle Children’s offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
